Scientific Society Report

Chairman: Mr. Janes.
Treasurer: C. Whittaker.
Secretary: J. M. Thornley.

The Scientific Society carried out its usual activities this year.  A great number of films were shown but I think that most members will agree that Mr. Briggs' demonstration of chemical phenomena was the highlight of the year.  The bangs and flashes satisfied the lower end of the school, but what appealed most to the upper end was that the sixth form managed to come out unscathed whilst Mr. Briggs set fire to the bench and his suit with a piece of phosphorus.

A trip was arranged for Easter but owing to unforeseen circumstances it had to be cancelled.  However, it is hoped that a party will visit Pattrieaux at Christmas.

Scripture Union

In the past year the Scripture Union has not been very active owing to lack of support from the lower forms in the school.  However, fortunately for the Society, the Sixth Form remained loyal even though homework for "A" levels was pressing.

The Society had its first meeting in October with a film about the Prodigal Son.  This was followed the next month by an illustrated talk by Mr. Quarmby on the Passion Play at Oberammergau.

The Rev. P. Hardman and the Rev. J. Brooks gave up an hour of their valuable time to speak about Modern Church Music and Elisha respectively.  After Christmas we were visited by Miss Readyhough from the Family Service Unit.  Miss Readyhough told us about the many needs of families in Oldham.  It was hoped that we as members of the Scripture Union would be able to do something constructive for these unfortunate families, but I am sorry to say that we did nothing but talk about it.  Major Whiteside came in March to speak about the work of the Salvation Army.  A lively discussion followed this meeting although I am afraid some of our members strayed away from the subject a little.

During the Easter holidays the Scripture Union visited York.  A visit was made to the Minster and various other places of interest.

The Secretary and Committee of the Scripture Union would like to thank Miss Gardner, Mr. Handforth and Mr. Quarmby for their help and support during the past year.
