School Notes

At the end of the year we were sorry to lose Mr. Quarmby, Miss Gardner and Mrs. Evers.  Mr. Quarmby has gone to a Theological College for further training prior to joining the church.

We extend a welcome to Mlle. Guillou, Mrs. Lynch, Miss Newell, Miss Spencer, Mr. Jackson and Mr. Stott, and we hope they will be happy with us.  We are grateful to Mr. Roy for his help in filling a temporary vacancy.

Speech Night was this year held on November 10th and that distinguished panellist of the B.B.C's radio programme "Ask Me Another," Dr Reginald Webster, was the guest speaker.

The school societies have once more offered a variety of programmes.  However, some societies were affected by insufficient support even though they endeavoured to provide items of interest.  I hope that next year this fault will be rectified.

A small party of sixth formers went with Mr. Quarmby to a conference at Manchester University organised by the Christian Education Movement.

Mr. Wells conducted his annual trips to Ingleton and the Lake District which were greatly enjoyed by all who took part.  He also took the sixth form geography sets to Malham, Southport and the Lake District on geographical field-work expeditions.  Yet another trip abroad during the summer holiday was organised by  Mr. Prenton, Mr. Briggs, Mr. Thompson and Miss Gardner.  This time the object of their travel was Dinard in France.

The sixth form French students visited the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester to see a production of "Le Cid" which was greatly enjoyed and was beneficial to their studies.

In October the Upper Sixth presented a Hallowe'en Dance and the profits were shared between two charities: Lady Loare's Thalidomide Appeal and the President Kennedy Memorial Fund.

In April the Dramatic Society presented an old favourite, "The Happiest Days of Your Life."  The audience enjoyed the play just as much as those taking part in it did.  Later in the week the company moved to Hollinwood School to present the play to some of the scholars who in the near future will be joining the pupils of Greenhill in the new comprehensive school, Street Farm.  This presentation was not only a gesture of friendship, but also one of thanks, because members of the Hollinwood School Brass Band came to Greenhill at Xmas to play a selection of carols.

This year Mrs. Ford has begun a new venture amongst the junior forms in the school, that of a craft club in which they have made such articles as lampshades and baskets.

We should like to congratulate Brian Stevenson on gaining a first-class honours degree in Geology at Liverpool University.
We should also like to thank Mrs. Lees, the school secretary, and the advertisers who contributed to the magazine for all their help and support during the past years. Especial thanks are given to Mr. Wells for his help as financial adviser.
