Autumn Evening

The evening sun is waning low,
The willow droops its golden crown,
The silver stream goes rambling on
Towards a far and distant town.

The farmer's ploughing in the fields
Near to the ancient mill,
Which rises up with ghostly frame
Upon a moorland hill.

The mighty oak its leaves has shed
Its branches rough and bare,
Are reaching up their crooked hands
To grasp the evening air.

And in that tree a little bird
Lands on the highest bough,
And then he leaves to follow on,
Behind the ever-churning plough.
