I have now posted the first of Barbara Howell's collection of five
formal Greengate St school photos, the 1951 Recorder Orchestra.
There is already a 1951 recorder group on the site provided by Doreen
Simpson (Capewell). I think I recall her referring to this as the
'junior' group, inferring that there was perhaps a senior group.
However, I believe that it is now more correct to refer to these
groups as an 'ensemble' and an 'orchestra' respectively, as described
by Barbara. The difference being in the variety of instruments used, a
very wide range being seen in this latest group. All this is gathered
from Wikipeadia, of course, who have a very informative article under

The role played by Miss Hulme in musical education during the early
years of the school is also very interesting. Officially the School
Secretary but who seemed to make an excellent job of musical education
as an extra curricular activity. She first appears in the 1939 staff
group and, of course, the orchestra group of the same year. Doreen
makes a special note about her in

The story about how these photos came to light and were scanned
appears on the main site Discussion Board, under the 'Trials &
Tribulations' thread. I wish all my tribulations were as pleasant!!
Our thanks to Barbara for sharing these photos with us, the rest will
follow in due course, also to Keith for bringing them to light and
making all the arrangements.
